When my family went into bankruptcy due to medical debt in the 80s, we were living in poverty for a time. Unfortunately, my babysitter took advantage of me and then ended up being an abusive pedophile who groomed me. If it wasn’t for school and being able to leave my home, I think I would’ve killed myself. I poured my energy into music and my grades because being at home was scary and stressful. As far as I’m concerned, going to school, saved me. Especially when you look at the statistics on violence, it’s usually somebody that the child knows that lives in their household with them, which was the case for me as well. Unfortunately, none of my teachers recognized the signs, but I was also very good at hiding it because my life had been threatened if I told anyone. So I was afraid all of the time. I also noticed that many of the children who homeschooled and would come in for band or an extracurricular activity weren’t very well socialized. I’m not saying that was the case for all of them, but the majority of them had trouble fitting in since they were so used to being at home and since who knows how many of them were being abused?? The state is absolutely failing at this and they fail at a lot of things they like to put out RSAs and not follow them.
